Competition Guidelines



GENERAL  GUIDELINES

A.       What topics are considered  “neoVative” entries?


      “neoVation” covers innovative solutions and/or system improvements related to issues on human health and the environment.  Examples of these topics are, but not limited to, the following:

·    Medicinal products (utilizing indigenous Philippine raw materials is a plus)
·    Low-cost and easy-to-use biomedical instrumentations
·    Biomedical novel materials
·    Instruments and kits for rapid diagnosis of allergies and common ailments
·    Functional foods and nutraceuticals
·    Novel food ingredients
·    Food Safety instrumentations for rapid threat detection
·    Ergonomically and aesthetically designed furnitures
·    Alternative energy sources and technologies
·    Carbon capture and storage technologies
·   Electronic devices and/or programs for real-time flood monitoring and public advisory system
·    “Green” and “gentle” manufacturing technologies
·   Novel waste water technologies
· Instrumentations for real-time stream contamination monitoring and automated corrective actions
·   Novel materials for “green” architecture
·   “Green” architecture design and technologies
·  Innovative engine or automobile design for fuel efficiency and carbon emission reduction
·  Engine and automobile design utilizing alternative energy


B.       Who can join?

The participating iThomasian are called neoVators.  They are a multi-discipline team of five to eight bona fide Thomasian students from, at least, two different Colleges in the University with one to two faculty adviser(s).  Graduate students and professional students are allowed to participate. 

Note that each student is allowed to participate as part of no more than one participating team, and no faculty member can advise more than one team.  Members of the “neoVation” organizing committee (faculty members, administrators and students) are not allowed to participate.


C.    What are in store for the winners?

Three Grand Prize winners and three runners-up will be chosen by a Panel of Judges chosen by the “Neovation” Organizing Team:

First Prize                             PhP 100, 000 + Medals
Second Prize                         PhP 50, 000  + Medals
Third Prize                            PhP 30, 000  + Medals
Three runners-up                   PhP 10, 000 + certificates per team

Three “Thomasian’s Choice” will be awarded based on Expo attendees survey and on-line voting:

Most Innovative                 PhP 10, 000 + Plaque
Most Marketable                 PhP 10, 000 + Plaque
Best Presentation                PhP 10, 000 + Plaque
Imbentong Tomasino           PhP 10, 000 + Plaque


D.    How to join?

(i) Information dissemination.  The “neoVation” Organizing Team will be going around the campus for information dissemination campaign from August to September 2012.  Schedule of their visits to different Colleges will be posted on the website:  http://www.ustinnovation.blogspot.com.


(ii) Preparation of entry.  After forming their team and brainstorming for their entry, the participants will prepare the write up for submission using the official Entry Form, which is available at the RCNAS Office at the 2nd floor of the Thomas Aquinas Research Complex (TARC).  E-mail may also be sent to ustinnovation@gmail.com to request for Entry Forms (MS Word format).

    The accomplished entry form shall contain the following basic information:
         Members of the Team
         Title
         Background and brief description of the innovation
         Innovative features of the entry
         Significance of the innovation
         Brief description of the methodology involved in the innovation
         References
         Sponsors (if any)

(iii) Submission of entries.  The accomplished Entry Form together with the mandatory documents (e.g. photocopy of student registration forms, photocopy of faculty adviser ID) and the appropriate supporting documents (e.g. design sketches, photos, calculations) must be submitted at the RCNAS Office in duplicate in a sealed long brown envelope.   For judging/selection purposes, electronic submissions will not be accepted.

    Note that the deadline for submission of entries is on November 15, 2012 December 10, 2012.

(iv) Pre-screening and qualification.  The entries will be pre-screened by the Organizing Team and their Panel of Consultants for qualification, where a maximum of 50 entries will be chosen to participate in the neoVation iThomasian Challenge + Expo”.  

    Qualified teams will be notified via e-mail on or before November 19, 2012 December December 14.  All qualified teams will be convened on November 23, 2012 January 7, 2013 at TARC Auditorium for further instructions and discussion of Final Judging Criteria and Innovation Expo rules.  Details will be sent via e-mail and will be announced on the “neoVation”  website.

(v) Prototype and/or Model Fabrication with Feasibility study.  All qualified teams are given until February 15, 2013 to develop prototype and/or model related to their proposed innovation.  Feasibility study should also be made, if applicable.

(vi) Submission of Executive Summary.  An Executive Summary for the Innovation Entry and accompanying poster will be prepared and submitted on or before February 15, 2013 at the RCNAS Office at TARC, or during the final orientation to be held on the same day at the TARC Auditorium.  Participants should note that sizeable percentage of judging criteria is allotted to the Executive Summary and Poster.

(vii) Innovation Expo.  All qualified entries will be exhibited in the neoVation: the  iThomasian Challenge + Expo” on March 4-8, 2013 at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion.  Winners will be chosen during the Expo by a Panel of Judges chosen by the “neoVation” Team.  Members of the Panel will be announced later.

(viii) Awarding Ceremony.  Winners will be announced and recognized during the “neoVation” Gala to be held on March 8, 2013 at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion.  Details will be posted on the “neoVation” website.
