FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

A.  Are participants allowed to have private sponsor(s) to alleviate expense in preparing prototypes, models and other pertinent materials for the competition?

Yes.  Participating teams are allowed, and in fact encouraged, to have sponsors from the industry, the alumni, and from private and government research institutes to fund their participation under instituted Programs related to student activity sponsorship by these funding entities.  However, these sponsors must be willing to conform with the UST Intellectual Property Policy and, in fact, will be required to sign a Waiver to this effect regarding any claim on the output of the project.

B.    Do participants need the endorsement of their College to participate?

No.  All bona fide Thomasian students, including Graduate and Professional students, are allowed to participate in teams for as long as they can prove the validity of their enrolment during the time of registration and submission of their Entry Form (See the General Competition Guidelines).  Their respective Colleges do not need to endorse or approve their participation.

C.   Can students participate using their defended theses as entries?

Yes, but only if their thesis adviser and/or anyone else who shares ownership of the thesis were duly notified and officially signified their approval to use the thesis or materials from the thesis as an entry or part of the entry in the “neoVation”.  All other issues related to Intellectual Property ownership involved in the usage of defended and/or on-going thesis of the participants and/or someone else must be referred to the University’s Intellectual Property Policy through the Office of the Vice Rector for Academic Affairs and Research.

D.   Is a demo at the Expo necessary if the qualified entry is a fabricated model or a product claiming certain function?

Yes, absolutely.  If the entry is claiming capacity and/or effectiveness in performing certain functions, then a prototype or model, whichever is appropriate, must be made, and its function(s) demonstrated during the Expo.

E.   For entries that work and proved to be effective, can the team entrant apply for patent?  Will the University help them do that?  Who will own the patent?

Yes, the participants may, and in fact, are encouraged to apply for patent and/or copyright, whichever is applicable, and the University will aid in the filing of application through the UST OVRAAR Office for Intellectual Property and Research.  All concerns related to intellectual property ownership will be addressed by the same Office.  Details will be discussed during information dissemination campaign and will be posted on the “neoVation” website.
